Autolycus
of Pitane
Master of the moving sphere and early astronomer of motion. Autolycus of Pitane (fl. late 4th century BCE) wrote the oldest surviving Greek mathematical treatise, all about the rising and setting of heavenly bodies. He didn’t just watch the stars — he tracked their movements with crisp geometry and a clockmaker’s eye. Later scientists stood on his shoulders (quietly, with respect). If the cosmos ever ran on gears, Autolycus was sketching the blueprints.
