Our story
Born during the Great Covid-19 Lockdown when binge-watching everything was a legitimate life choice, the Ancient Science Portal project was set in motion by Michalis Sialaros and Anastasia Doxanaki from the Department of History and Philosophy of Science of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In its early days, a team of students (click for the names!) jumped in to lend a hand. Why? Because, as it turned out, binge-watching wasn't the only option after all.
The project began with a simple yet ambitious idea: to make free digital sources on ancient science more accessible — not just to students, teachers, and researchers, but to anyone with a curious mind. Over time, its mission expanded, and it now serves as a centralized hub, aggregating resources from various online collections. Here, you’ll find ancient scientific texts, translations, manuscripts, and secondary sources, all neatly gathered in one place — think of it like The Lord of the Rings, but not for rings. The portal also features directories for institutions, journals, and societies dedicated to the study of ancient science, helping users connect with academic programs worldwide. Whether your interest lies in historical astronomy, mathematics, or early philosophical texts, this resource is your digital compass.
But why stop there? Ancient science isn’t meant to gather digital dust — it’s meant to be explored, debated, and shared. So, the project took the leap onto Instagram, where history meets hashtags and timeless ideas get a modern glow-up. Follow along for bite-sized wisdom, deep dives, and the occasional Eureka! moment.
